ARMA Technical Bulletin: Why Ventilation is Important
From the perspective of shingle manufacturers, why is attic ventilation important? This document answers that, published by The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA).
Attic ventilation moves heat out of an attic to help ensure the maximum service life of the roof.
Attic ventilation can improve the energy efficiency of the building.
Proper attic ventilation can improve building occupant comfort.
Ventilation moves occupancy-generated water vapor out of the attic space before it can become problematic.
Proper ventilation may reduce ice damming in snowy climates.
This technical bulletin from ARMA includes a laundry list of the practices that make up a proper attic ventilation system including these two critical points:
1. “When reroofing, replace ventilation devices within the field of the roof.”
2. “Combining different types of exhaust vents on the same roof above a common attic space could cause short-circuiting of the attic ventilation system, resulting in incomplete ventilation.”
