October 2023 Lesson Plan
Ridge Vent Smokehouse Demonstration
Of the five types or categories of attic exhaust vents (wind turbines, gable vents, individual box vents or off-ridge vents, roof-mount or gable-mount power fans, and ridge vents), only ridge vents provide continuous exhaust airflow along the entire peak of the roof without any gaps or airflow “dead spots.” That’s because only ridge vents are installed along the entire horizontal peak of the roof interruption-free. In this smoke house video, some additional critical airflow points are highlighted about ridge vents and about attic ventilation in general. Seeing is believing.
The wind is a more powerful mover of air than thermal buoyancy or “warm air rising.” Certain ridge vent designs use the wind to their advantage.
Check out the difference in the smoke exiting the vent before the wind kicks in and after.
What happens to the smoke (or the attic airflow) with and without proper incoming intake ventilation? No wonder this is the #1 mistake in residential attic ventilation.
